Taking pictures for enjoyment

Nice to be using my camera for leisure again – battery grip off, 50mm ƒ1.8 on and wander around and see what takes my fancy. Much nicer than that big bag of kit and a tripod. Maybe even try my mountain bike out again soon at this rate.

Shard

Still growing and we’re still observing from the bedroom window. Can’t be long now til they top out. Reserving judgment on it til it’s complete.

Franks Campari Bar – 2011

After a fairly epic week in terms of work, both Architecture & Photography, I went over to the pre-opening of Franks Campari bar to meet Chris and a few of his friends. I’ve never seen South London so busy with art students and what is commonly known as hipsters I guess. After such a busy week I didn’t stay long but I think I’ll head back a few times this summer to get some more shots of the art and installations and also hopefully to enjoy a few drinks with friends.

And a quick video of the crowds.

And whilst the view really is amazing we really are spoilt by the view from our bedroom window.

Lomo LC-A

I rarely seem to use this camera, which is silly really as whenever I do I’m always pleased with the results. I’m still getting through my £4 bag of expired Fuji Superia from a few years ago – down to the last few rolls of 200 ASA. They seem to have a lovely grain which coupled with the sharp and contrasty lens of the LC-A seems to give a lovely quality to them. Some of these shots are from 2010 I think. Nice to forget what’s on a roll then be reminded months or even years later when it’s developed. Currently shooting with some Ilford HP5 in the LC-A. Looking forward to the result from that little experiment too.

Inspiration #3 – Michael Chrisman

Number three in the series of inspiration posts – I’d forgotten I was doing this series to be honest. I’ve seen lots and lots of amazing photos recently but this set of work really jumped out at me. I caught sight of his work via a blog post over on Flickr of course. In a similar way to previous posts his work seems to be very much about seeing some form of beauty in the mudane or areas where you might not expect to find anything worthy of photographing. In particular his industrial work. Here’s a few of my favourite shots.

The riding of bicycles…

…is something that I’ve strangely neglected as of late (apart from commuting). The chance to take a trip to Wales with Jenx, Matt and Jim was something I was keen not to miss, as much for the riding as the shits and giggles that usually follows. We went to the usual spot of Afan for a trip round Syline on the Sat. As usual it started of sunny but ended up wet and muddy as hell. Some funny moments of Matt riding through hub deep mud and also endo-ing into it certainly kept the smiles coming. The lack of views was a shame but thats what happens when you ride in Wales.

After getting cleaned and dry we headed up to a tiny little village near Brechfa and a superb little bunk house with a pub attached. Great fun and almost everyone in the bar was speaking Welsh. Good food and lots of Guinness followed. An early night was needed. Waking up to a room of wet kit, skinky feet and farts was less pleasant but it’s all part of the experience. After a leisurely start it was off to Brechfa for a quick route around the Raven I think. I was far too tired for it after Skyline the day before. Would be nice to go back with a bit more energy and after a less hectic week at work.

Glad to be back in the saddle though. Thanks Graham for organising and thanks for Matt and Jim for the additional shits and giggles.

Great weekend of riding with Graham, Matt & Jim

The Mountain

A bit of a description from the photographer. Pretty impressive stuff.

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (http://bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.

Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

Peaslake walk

Yesterday we (Emma, Jane and I) drove out to Peaslake in Surrey to go for a walk around and just get out of London for a few hours. Normally a place I’d go for mountainbiking but interesting to go there walking. Had a wander around from the car park near some of the trails I normally ride, up past Barry Knows Best and then over to the Holmbury Hill viewpoint. Bit too hot for the ladies and one too many hills. Still it was good to get out. The trails looked amazing and there were plenty of riders around. Think I’ll head out there next weekend with the bikes.

A few pics from Instagram app on the iPhone as well as the proper camera.
