Four kittens

This is so much better than watching TV. Four kittens in a pen with toys, things to jump on and each other to play with. It reminds me of the farm cats my sister and I got when I was 10. Unfortunately mine got hit by a car but my sisters lived to the grand old age of 22.

Who knows how long this feed will be up for but catch it whilst you can. It’s completely mesmerising. Careful you don’t waste too much time though.

Hashima Island

Details of this ruined island off the coast of Japan have been doing the rounds recently due to it’s inclusion in the latest James Bond film, Skyfall. Apparently the actual film was shot at Pinewood but the wider opening scenes of the island were shot on location.

Although I’ve often posted about photos showing urban decay or “ruin porn”* before I have slight problem with the glorification of the subject matter. However I’m posting this as the short documentary offers a moving account of someone returning to the island after growing up as a child there as well as it being such an unusual context.

Oak tree timelapse

My mate Simon recently had a go at doing a DSLR timelapse of an Oak tree that was being removed next to his house. Timelapse is harder to do that it might seem at first with all the planning required to make sure it all works as well as making sure the timing comes together. Unfortunately the battery looks like it ran out during the night but it still makes a nice bit of footage. Pretty impressive for a first go really.

My favourite part is all the lights flicking on and off as the evening draws in.

You’ve seen these right?

Yes, another place I’m ‘curating’. The term curating needs some discussion but lets save that for another post. So I’ve set up a Channel on Vimeo for all the things I find to add to one page with the idea that others can view it and then share further. The title – “You’ve seen these right?” which seems to be a commonly used term when sending a video to a friend as you never know quite how viral it’s gone.

This also raise the issue that there’s so much good stuff out there that it’s hard to keep up with it all.

Berlin hyper-lapse

Can’t quite make my mind up if I like this or not. I think it’s worth a watch anyway for its unusual take on the whole timelapse genre. Also its fairly impressive technically in terms of post processing – worth a view.

One point perspective

So good!

Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick has a habit of using one-point perspective for dramatic effect, often with the vanishing point in the dead center of the frame, disorienting the viewer and creating tension for his scenes. Film enthusiast kogonada recently took a bunch of Kubrick films, collected the shots showing this technique, and created the interesting supercut seen above.

GoPro with dolphins

This one has been doing the rounds recently and justifiably so. The shots of the dolphins swimming are brilliant. The custom made “torpedo” housing looks pretty clever too and seems to have got a bit of attention from GoPro themselves.
