Cycling Love this!

You was flying along there mate!

Not what usually gets said to me when a car window winds down but made my day yesterday after cycling back towards Bellenden Road. I replied with “yeah sorry mate I was trying not to undertake you“, his response and that light is brilliant “It’s like the police behind me“. I said I was cycling to try and keep in shape, his response “keep off the carbs mate“… and on that note we departed.

Anyway, faith in humanity restored and a great ride back on the Condor. It’s off for a service in a few days and will then be used for the rest of the summer. Great riding geared again, you can get some real speed up on the roads. Love it.

3D printing in the desert

An interesting little project which was sent my way last week – I was left mouth wide open after watching to the end of the video. The idea of 3D printing is becoming far more mainstream and we use a fair bit of it at work – I even had a leaflet sent to me from HP showing their new desktop 3D printers recently. However this project takes a slightly different approach and uses the power of the sun and sand (silicon) as well as some clever computer work to create objects in the desert – the energy source and material are abundant. The hipster outfit kind of makes it too.

The project is described by it’s author Markus Kayser as follows:

In a world increasingly concerned with questions of energy production and raw material shortages, this project explores the potential of desert manufacturing, where energy and material occur in abundance.

In this experiment sunlight and sand are used as raw energy and material to produce glass objects using a 3D printing process, that combines natural energy and material with high-tech production technology.

Solar-sintering aims to raise questions about the future of manufacturing and triggers dreams of the full utilisation of the production potential of the world’s most efficient energy resource – the sun. Whilst not providing definitive answers, this experiment aims to provide a point of departure for fresh thinking.

White room > stickers > coloured room

Take one completely white empty room, add some sticker sheets, thousands of kids allowed to add them anywhere they want – and you end up with something strangely beautiful!

From this fairly soulless white space…

Obliteration 1 600x399

Obliteration 4 600x399

Obliteration 5 5 600x360

To this which I find completely beautiful and fascinating at the same time. It would have made a great time-lapse seeing all the kids adding the dots in.

The installation, the obliteration room, is by artist Yayoi Kusama at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane. More info at the original post over at thisiscolossal.com.

It looks like she has a show at Tate Modern coming up on the 9th Feb too which I’m definitely going to have to see.

With Associates – November

With Associates have completed their November update to their redesign-our-site-once-a-month thing. The end result is great as usual but also sad to see our efforts for October go.

However the thing that’s far more interesting to me is the behind the scenes or process that goes into it. A fairly ambitious 4 hours was set to do the whole thing and again was recorded with a timelapse which fittingly is four minutes long.

And here’s a few more images from their Flickr set.

Skiing in Lausanne

A beautiful set of images of Sanaa’s Rolex Learning Centre in Lausanne being used as an area for skiing and generally mucking about. Love it. Probably not what the Architect intended but lots of fun regardless.

Shetland on a Brompton

As the recent owner of a Brompton bicycle – purchased on the cycle to work scheme for meetings and general pootling around town – I find this really impressive. Beautifully shot and edited too. Leaves a really nice feeling after watching. Makes me want to do Lands End to John O’groats. Looks like a fantastic experience.

60° North – A British Adventure from Joe Sheffer on Vimeo.

This is a short film about our pack raft and folding bicycle adventure from Sumburgh Head to Muckle Flugga in the Shetland Islands.

Music by Cinematic Orchestra.

All shot with 2 Canon 5Dmk2’s and as many lens/tripods/sliders as we could cram onto the back of a Brompton.
