Gaawd I always thought I’d be smarter…

On Sat evening Emma took me to see an amazing film by Miranda July – The Future – at Tate Modern. I’d previously seen her film Me and You and Everyone We Know which was great. A very arty crowd had arrived for the showing which also included a 30 min Q&A at the end. I wasn’t really sure what to expect of the film but was pleasantly surprised and constantly engaged by it which is rare for me at the cinema.

It’s hard to describe without giving too much away but it reflects upon all sorts of ideas around a couple in their mid 30’s and their lack of commitment, reflections upon growing old(er) and the daily hum drum of life. That is by no means a decent summary and others will do it far more justice. Suffice to say that I think you should see it. I loved it and it’s been incredibly thought provoking since. So many ideas in there but they completely flow without feeling like you’re being spoon fed. A very intelligent film! Watch the trailer and then go and see it.

And here she is. The lovely Miranda July who came across very well during the Q&A. Very genuine and interested in her craft and not fame or fortune. A bargain at £5 ticket too!

The Thing

Not usually a fan of Halloween but this year we went to the BFI to see the amazing John Carpenter film The Thing. As usual I hadn’t seen it before but to see it for the first time on the big screen was superb. REally great horror film. Well worth seeing again.

The Shining

In my quest to catch up on all the decent films I’ve missed to date I’ve been steadily watching some great film thanks to Jane and Emma – my film mentors. A few weekends ago it was The Lost Boys and yesterday it was The Shining. Jane bought me the Kubrick box set for my 30th so there’s a few more to see in there.

Well, The Shining summed up in one word – terrifying! Really impressive camera work and the music really does kick it all up a notch. Jack Nicholson really is impressive in it, he always seems to manage to do the crazy characters down to a T. I dread to think what he’s like in real life. It’s obviously open to interpretation as to what is going on and the meaning of some scenes but I like that. No hand holding from the director in this one. It was pretty edgy watching it at home but I dread to think what it would have been like at the cinema with a decent sound system.

Anyway, here’s a hilarious remix as a new less scary version of the film trailer.

Kick Ass

On Monday Emma, Jane and I went to see the awesome film Kick Ass. I laughed my ass off all the way through. So many great references throughout it and also just some really endearing moments. Incredibly well done. My favourite part has to be when Kick Ass and Red Mist are in the car bobbing their heads to Gnarls Barkley.

You should see it!

5000 little fingers

Went to see “5000 little fingers” by Dr Seuss last night at the Photographers Gallery with Emma. Completely mental-crazy-surreal but highly entertaining.

Låt den rätte komma in 2008 – Let the right one in

Managed to get a bit of a ride in yesterday morning with Gary round the park. Only 40 miles in total but good to get out. Found it quite hard at times so need to get more than just the commute going if I’m going to have any chance of doing the Dunwich this year.

Went into town for a wander afterwards with Emma and saw Let the Right one in at the Haymarket. Was a bit worried that it was going to be hard work with it being subtitled. It’s so beautiful and incredibly shot. The whole film really impressed me. A great take on the whole vampire idea. Watch the trailer below and then go and see it!

Funny like I’m a clown..

Continuing my ‘catching up’ on films I really should have seen years ago, and general film education from Jane and Emma, last night I watched Goodfellas for the first time. Pretty epic for a Tuesday evening but a great film. The best scene is obviously the one below! Heard the quotes from this scene so many times but never actually seen it properly until yesterday. Rocky films next perhaps.
