The snow doesn’t change but the BBC website does

Fantastic look back at the BBC and all it’s different iterations from 1999 – 2013. Same old headlines but different BBC site. Funny that you don’t really remember how basic sites were back then. Maybe it’s due to incremental improvements but very nice to see it all laid out graphically like this.

See the full sized shot on Flickr. The rest of his photo stream is also well worth checking out.

Why it’s better to fly to Shetland

Best watched with sound. Tears rolling down my eyes after watching this.

Isn’t film lovely!

I’ve saved up a fair few of those funny light sensitive things in little metal canisters this last year and finally got round to posting them out to Genie Imaging*. One of them was just blank which I had expected, but still annoying. Fortunately the rest came back ok on a CD. It was at that moment I realised that both of my computers don’t have CD drives any more. Ahh well the office PC still does.

*Their website is awful but their processing is great.

I’m really pleased with them and that probably has nothing to do with me. The quality in the film is just sublime. It’s also amazing to see events that happened so long ago recorded like this. In fact one of the films was from my 30th which was three years ago. I’m gradually uploading them to Flickr but I’ve added a few of my favourites (so far) below. These are a mixture of two cameras – the Nikon F801 with a 50mm prime and the Lomo LC-A. Film stock was either Ilford HP5 400 for the B+W or Kodak Portra VC 160 for the colour.

One thing I was slightly surprised about was how much I liked the black and white shots. I’ve almost entirely stopped doing any digital black and white work as it never seems to fit. I always ending up thinking it looks better in colour when editing in Lightroom.

Cycle Love celebrates it’s first birthday

I’ve already written about my love for Cycle Love. You really should have added them to your daily sites / RSS feeds / follow them Twitter etc and also bought a T-shirt from them by now!

The site is reaching its first birthday after a successful year posting some superb articles, images and videos. If you’re around on the 29th Jan and in London then you should head down to Look Mum no Hands from 6.30pm. More details on the Cycle Love site.

The houses of Dungeness

Another set of images from our visit to Dungeness last weekend, this time of the weird and wonderful structures that exist there. Hopefully these are slightly less cliche than the others.

I deliberately avoided the two modern houses that have recently arrived designed by Simon Condor and NORD – I think they’re pretty well covered already and the originals are far more interesting to me.

I shot these all handheld with a 50mm ƒ1.8 and I might do a few prints of these soon if anyone is interested. A select few below but the full set can be seen on Flickr.

Weekend in pictures

Cold weekend sun

Quite a relaxing day on Sat of catching up in the flat, editing photos and a quick ride to Dulwich park to meet James and talk about ideas for blogs, cycling, photography and other things.

Then on Sunday I helped a friend out doing some painting of window frames on his house before the builders struck the scaffold. Of course that gave me the perfect opportunity to indulge my scaffold obsession close up. Not the ideal weather to be painting outside to be honest but plenty of coffee breaks kept the hands warm.

When I got back there was time for a brief walk in Peckham park to enjoy the sunshine as well as some coffee and cake. Nice to have the X100 back to play with again as Mathew has had it for a while to evaluate. Don’t think he was so keen on it overall due to it’s quirks but I love it. Love that lens.

Dog teaches puppy to walk downstairs

One rescue puppy teaching another rescue puppy how to walk down stairs. Doesn’t get much cuter than that.

Probably best with the sound off.

London from a helichopper

Not a big fan of the Met or their egos but they do capture the odd good image flying around in their helicopter over London. This one caught my eye in particular.

England without the clouds

A rare thing indeed but perfect for grabbing a shot of our green a pleasant land from a satellite belonging to the European Space Agency.

A rare cloud-free view of Ireland, Great Britain and northern France

Just riding along and then…

In this short film I examine the ever closer relationship between man, machine and the Earth from whence they both came.
