Heygate

Finally got round to shooting a few shots of the Heygate Estate at Elephant & Castle with Aaron from Part 3. A little colder than I had hoped at around -2 so spent a lot less time going around setting up shots. Anyway, below are a few of my favourites. I shot a few more on the Olympus but will have to wait until I process the film for those.

Heygate Estate

I also spent a bit of time wandering around the edge of the Heygate Estate today as the 168 bus was no-where to be seen. It’s completely empty and I guess it’s due to be pulled down soon. I’m thinking of going back with a tripod and trying to record the place before it disappears. Perhaps with the Olympus and a B+W film or maybe the D300 and practice the Architecture shots. Either way I think it would make a great series of images.

It certainly felt odd wandering around it all boarded up and empty. One for next weekend perhaps. Here’s a few images from today though.

On the list

So this afternoon I got an email at work to say that I am on the ARB register. I’m legally entitled to use the term Architect now! Happy days.

Architecture Rant

Useless

Having spent 5 years at Uni in Portsmouth I shouldn’t really expect too much of the admin or accounts department in such an institution but the sheer uselessness of Kingston University has exceeded all expectations. Not content with trying to charge me £600 for deferring the course when the big flood happened they’re now demanding £1000 for un-paid fees! As usual it’s impossible to find anyone who knows what the fuck is going on.

Thank god I never have to go through any of these institutions ever again!

Chipperfield Exhibition

Last week Emma and I went to see the Chipperfield Exhibition at the Design Museum during our few days off. I really admire some of their work and I was looking forward to seeing more of it. Highlights included the incredible models as well as a large section devoted to the Neues Musueum in Berlin. However some of the text had a real air of arrogance about it, especially about not building much in the UK, as if they deserved to build here. It was also interesting that there was no real mention of a client or end user in a lot of the text. I was left with a feeling that some of their work is over detailed and perhaps too perfect in many ways. It also felt slightly joyless and austere. Architecture for Architects perhaps which is ultimately not my thing.

Architecture Love this!

House Bierings by Rocha Tombal

I’ve not paid an enormous amount of attention to the Architecture journals recently as there hasn’t really been much that’s caught my eye. I’ve also wanted to leave work at work and concentrate on Part 3 and Photography when outside of work. However Neil Mac sent this link round the other day. I must admit that I’m completely awestruck by how beautiful and well detailed it is. Maybe I’ll start being a bit more interested if I see more things like this.

Architecture Work

Part 3 hand in

Well I’ve been up all night and I am about to go an get something to eat and then go and hand in my final 10,000 word career appraisal and PEDR log sheets recording all my professional experience to date. It’s quite a milestone for me so it seems like a good time to reflect on the cost of getting to this stage. So the vital stats are as follows.

11 years overall. Sept 98 – Sept 2009
5 years full time in University.
2 years part time at University.
7 practices worked for.
15,500 hours of professional experience recorded in PEDR sheets.
£45,000 debt (give or take a few k)
And a bit of a belly…

Fingers crossed they let me in. Just got to wait for the interview in September now.
